Sketch for Ceramics & Voice
How can a song be made physical? What happens to performer, material, audience? What kinds of tensions are built through contrasting (dis)harmonies? Which tools become available, which functions inspire improvisation? What remains and what is revealed?
This Performance 'Sketch' is a first attempt toward continued research between classical voice/song and contemporary construction site. The piece explores voice as an extension of the body, using sculptural elements made from fired ceramic based on machine parts. It activates the ground, using gravity as a source to carve a pathway through a stage while making a drawing.
Vocal excerpts sung a capella by the artist are as follows:
'Lied des Marmottenbuben' Ludwig van Beethoven, op. 52 nr. 9
'An die Musik' Franz Schubert, op. 88 nr. 4
'Amor Ch'attendi?' Giulio Caccini
'Ave Maria' Giulio Caccini
This piece was performed, constructed, and conceived by Madeline Stillwell as part of an Artist Residency at the EKWC in the Netherlands, 2023. Filmed by Ruta Rutkute. Copyright Madeline Stillwell, 2023, all rights reserved.
